Friday, May 16th, 2008Li Bingbing Interview on “Forbidden Kingdom” (2008)
Thursday, May 15th, 2008Li Bingbing gives an interview on TheStar Online (http://www.star-ecentra.com), about her experience on the set of The Forbidden Kingdom (2008), working Jackie Chan, and having a character such as the white haired bounty-hunter. The following are excerpts from this online article.
Li Bingbing on playing Nichang:
The 32-year-old beauty from Harbin, Heilongjiang, plays the White-haired Demoness Lian Nichang, which was inspired by Ronny Yu’s wuxia (martial arts) film The Bride with White Hair.
That movie, made in 1993, was based on Leung Yu Sang’s 1954 novel of the same name and starred Taiwanese star Brigitte Lin Ching Hsia as the titular character.
“I feel very fortunate to have gotten the opportunity to play the Bai Fa Mo Nu (White-haired Demoness) character in the movie,†Li said at an interview in Beijing.
“At first, the White-haired Demoness did not exist in the script. The character was originally Bai Mei Dao Ren (White-browed Taoist priest, a Shaolin martial arts master fictionalised in the late 70s Hong Kong wuxia flicks).
“Then the script was brought to China, where it was discovered that present wuxia enthusiasts were better acquainted with the White-haired Demoness compared to White-browed Taoist (who is historically often portrayed as a traitor).
“I personally feel that many women viewers would like White-haired Demoness, for she is single-minded in love, unwavering in her convictions, and outstanding in martial arts,†added Li.
Director of photography Peter Pau, who won an Oscar in 2001 for his vivid cinematography in Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon, was also the cinematographer for The Bride with White Hair, so he suggested the change as he felt audiences could better accept the more contemporary character.
“It must have been some 15 years since Pau made the movie. It’s like his precious baby. He particularly loved the White-haired Demoness immortalised by Brigitte Lin. I feel that they created a legendary character on the Chinese stage, who made such an impact that she has become a classic wuxia figure widely loved by audiences.
“Now, almost two decades later with such technological advances, our challenge lies in recreating the White-haired Demoness for the new millennium. It was a very stimulating exercise for us.â€
When she was filming, she could feel Pau paying special attention to detail.
“While I was filming some mid-air fight scenes, Peter would rush up on a platform some two to three metres high and gently fan me so my hair would flit about my face lightly just the way he wanted it.â€
Li Bingbing on her English:
One of three Asian actresses shortlisted by Canadian-based casting director Poping Auyeung, Li aced the audition with producer Casey Silver and director Rob Minkoff with her flawless interpretation of the English dialogue, which she had learnt phonetically.
“While waiting, I studied with a dialogue coach who helped to guide my pronunciation and phrasing. I’ve never felt my English was good.â€
The script hadn’t been changed yet when she read the lines during the casting. It was all written for a man, the White-browed Taoist.
Li Bingbing on working with Jackie Chan:
As the sexy man-hating female warrior, Li got to crack her whip and fight just about everybody in the movie. She also had to learn archery and horseback riding for the role. Even her long white tresses had take on a life of their own and turn into a deadly weapon.
Li, in particular, had many wire-hanging scenes in the action-packed movie. Although she can be considered an experienced action actress, having featured in action flicks such as Johnnie To’s Love for All Seasons (2003) and Jingle Ma’s Silver Hawk (2004), Li was no kung fu expert.
“Jackie knew I had numerous fight scenes, so he gave me a special wire-suit, the very best for the wire-acts, costing a whopping US$1,600 (RM5,000). The ordinary ones we usually use only cost RMB1,000 (RM450). He takes very good care of everyone on the set. He even taught me kung fu while we were filming.
“During my fight scenes with Jackie, he’d be the one getting injured. I’d be alright because, I was wearing very thick padding and a metal armour. He gets very worried when fighting with me because I’m no kung fu expert. But, I’m very happy when fighting him because he can adapt to every action, even if I make the wrong move, hit too high or too low. He’d be able to make everything look just right.â€

Bingbing Li to co-star “Forbidden Kingdom” sequel with Jet Li and Jackie Chan
Sunday, May 11th, 2008Bingbing Li’s star continues to shine in North America, as Forbidden Kingdom continues to generate revenue both in the United States and internationally. According to Hollywood-stats website, The-Numbers.com, the movie has now soared past $88 million. According to China.org.cn, there is a rumor the producers would make a sequel only if the revenue broke $50 million. The existence of a sequel is also mentioned on Miss Li’s official website, LiBingbing.net (you will need to read Chinese to translate it).
To quote China.org.cn:
The overwhelming box-office success of the action-adventure flick “The Forbidden Kingdom” has prompted its producers to shoot a sequel.
Sources from the film’s Chinese investor and distributor, Huayi Brothers, said Tuesday they will once again collaborate with Hollywood for part two of the Jackie Chan-Jet Li film, the Beijing Times reported.
The two action heroes will appear in the follow-up film, together with actress Li Bingbing, who made her major Hollywood debut with “Forbidden Kingdom.”
The sequel is likely to feature a romance between Jet Li and Li Bingbing’s characters, the Beijing Times report says.
According to earlier rumors, Huayi Brothers president Wang Zhongjun said a sequel would be made if global revenue of “The Forbidden Kingdom” hit US$50 million.
The film raked in almost half that amount in its opening weekend in North America two weeks ago, topping the local box office with US$20.9 million. According to the Beijing Times, the US$70-million film has already broken even.
Pondering the Sequel’s Storyline:
Of interest in this article is the fact that there will be a romance between Bingbing Li’s characters — PLURAL! This begs a few questions: Is this a sequel or a prequel? Does this mean that the Monkey King is in love with the white witch? Or will Miss Li be coming back as another character?
But if this is a prequel, then does this explain the origins of the White Witch (Ni Chang) and why she wants immortality? Could she have been in love with the Monkey King? And could she have been in love with him and wanted immortality to be with him?
Or are we talking about an entirely different angle? If the story takes place after the current movie then it would be an interesting tale about the Monkey King’s journey as an immortal, falling in love with one woman only to see her die of old age, then living on to meet another woman that is a spitting image of the first love. Since both the Monkey King and the Drunken Immortal are, well, immortal, that would explain why both of them are in the same movie together again.
Well, we can all be rather happy whichever way the filmmakers craft the story. After all we get another chance to see Li Bingbing’s great acting and beauty on the screen again along with those two powerhouses, Jet Li and Jackie Chan. Congratulations and good luck to everyone involved!
Yao Ming Tops Forbes Chinese Celebs, Li Bingbing following Zhang Ziyi
Sunday, May 11th, 2008
According to a March 12th article posted on China.org.cn, basketball player, Yao Ming tops Forbes’ Chinese celebrities. Interestingly, Bingbing Li is mentioned as one of a handful of actresses who are also making waves following Zhang Ziyi as one of the ” most active contributors to the Chinese entertainment industry”:
Forbes, which has been producing annual Chinese mainland celebrity rankings since 2004, released its latest list on Tuesday amid stars’ skepticism and the public’s anticipation.
Like in the previous year, NBA star Yao Ming topped the new list of 100 celebrities with the most frequent media exposure and a pre-tax yearly income of 387 million yuan (US$54.5 million), also the highest among all.
Olympic champion hurdler Liu Xiang followed Yao Ming closely like last year. Rising basketball player Yi Jianlian, ranked No. 4, is the only other sports star on the top 10.
Martial-arts superstar Jet Li, who failed to enter the top 100 last year, soared to No. 3 with the reason given by Forbes that the kung-fu king has had three new films since the last ranking (“The Warlords,” “The Forbidden Kingdom,” and “The Mummy 3″), and his heartfelt devotion to charity work (Jet Li runs the disaster-relief One Foundation) also added to his score.
Hollywood-bound actress Zhang Ziyi leads the female front-runners. She will have two films opening soon this year, including her new Hollywood effort “The Horsemen” and Chinese director Chen Kaige’s biopic of Peking opera master Mei Lanfang. Her high-profile romance with multimillionaire Vivi Nevo also contributed to her high media expose.
Following Zhang Ziyi on the list are actresses Fan Bingbing, Vicki Zhao Wei, Zhou Xun and Li Bingbing, all among the most active contributors to the Chinese entertainment industry.
Although there seems to be a little confusion mixing up Li Bingbing with another Chinese actress, Fan Bingbing, the two look quite different, but both seem to be rather popular with the Chinese fans.
